The Saint Gaudens $20 gold double eagle coins are either called a St. Gaudens or the Double Eagle were produced by the United States Mint from 1907 to 1933. President Teddy Roosevelt approached his friend and America’s foremost sculptor, Augustus-St. Gaudens to design a new $20 gold coin. Therefore, St. Gaudens is named after its designer who designed the obverse(front) and reverse(back). The observe depicts Lady Liberty holding a staff and an olive branch as she walks from the sun. The date appears in the right and in some of the 1907 mintage it appears in Roman numerals. The world LIBERTY arcs above her. St. Gaudens’ mark appears on the obverse of the coin under the date. The reverse(back) of the coin features a bald eagle soaring above the sun. The words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS span across the top of the coin.

Minted 1907 – 1916 & 1920 – 1933
Gross Weight: 33.346 grams
Fineness: .900
Actual Gold Content: .9675 troy ounce
Composition: 90% gold, 10% copper

St Gaudens Double Eagle makes an excellent choice for someone who wants a bullion type investment but is worried about government confiscation. The premiums on circulated $20’s are low most of the time yet in a heated market, premiums can move higher quickly so check the dollar amount over spot before purchase and remember these coins contain slightly less than 1 ounce pure gold.

The 1933 St Gauden is extremely valuable. The ownership for these coins have been illegal since 1933. The US government will confiscate it if you own one. In 2002, the last 1933 St. Gauden was sold for $7,590,000. It was confiscated from a a British Coin Dealer and after a long legal battle between a British coin dealer & the US government, the proceeds of the auction was split 50/50.

American Gold Eagle Proof 1oz

American Gold Eagle Proof – Back

The American Gold Eagle Proof program was introduced in 1986. The term “proof” refers to a specialized minting process. The burnished coin blanks are double-struck to create a more 3-dimensional effect, and higher-relief dies are cast to bring out all the beauty of the original sculptures. Everything is sharper, with more depth, and the coins often exhibit a cameo appearance with brightly-mirrored fields and snowy devices (the portraits, etc). The coins are then hermetically sealed in plastic holders and packaged for sale to the general public. At the US Mint, these coins are never even touched by human hands!

The front of American Gold eagle Proof features the rendition of Augustus Saint-Gauden’s full length figure of lady Liberty with flowing hair, holding a torch in her hand ans an olive branch in her left. The reverse of the coin design by Miley Busiek, features a male eagle carrying an olive branch flying above a nest containing a female eagle and her hatchlings.

The United States Mint, as well as others around the world, produce high-quality specimens of these coins for collectors. These are known as Proof Coins. Formerly reserved as presentation pieces for heads of state and other dignitaries, some of these coins carry six-figure price tags today! But now the same quality coins are available to the general public.

Proof coins are the ultimate expression of the coin-maker’s art. They carry a slight premium to regular collector coins, but once you’ve seen the difference, you won’t forget it! South Bay Gold stocks both American and World Gold and Silver coins, which are very popular gifts for special occasions (especially for the man who has everything!)

The US Gold Eagle also known as the American Eagle is one of the most sought after gold coins. Its beautiful design is captivating and inspiring.

The American Eagle Coin was created in 1986 with Augustus Saint-Gaudens depiction of Liberty as seen previously on the $20 St. Gaudens Double Eagle gold coin which was minted from 1907-1933. Like its silver counterpart the American Gold Eagle has been produced and sold in bullion and proof finishes. They both feature a rendition of sculptor Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design which was first created for the nation’s first circulating half-dollar coin in 1916.

The Gold Eagle is 22k gold with a fineness of .916 making it a very durable coin. It contains 91.67% gold, 3% silver, and 5.33% copper. Even though the coin contains 22k gold its total pure gold content is equal to 1 troy ounce.

Gold Eagles that where minted 1986-1991 are dated with Roman numerals. In 1992, the U.S. Mint switched to Hindu-Arabic (modern number system) numbers for dating American Gold Eagles.
